Theme Park Tips for Seniors

theme park tips for seniors

What better time than summer to enjoy Orlando’s local theme parks? We’ve all grown to love the magic of Disney World. But remember the aching in your legs after hours of walking, standing in lines, and pushing through crowded areas? Imagine how the seniors in your family must feel. Of course you want them to come and enjoy the fun and excitement. But to make everyone’s theme park experience safe and fun, it’s important to keep a few things in mind.

Avoid Crowds

Summer is the most popular theme park season. You can avoid crowds by:

  • Visiting during the week instead of weekends
  • Eating your meal early or late instead of during normal meal times
  • Visiting on a month with no holidays.

In other words, wherever a crowd is most likely to be, try to avoid the area or find ways around it. That way you can still enjoy the park without feeling overwhelmed.

Consider Mobility Assistance

By attending a theme park, you can easily walk up to three or more miles. If your loved one can’t handle the walking distance, consider mobility assistance. Bring your own wheelchair or an ECV (Electric Conveyance Vehicle.) If you don’t have access to mobility assistance, most theme parks will rent them out for a daily fee. However, each park is different. Disney World for example, goes by a first-come, first-served basis and doesn’t accept reservations. Whichever theme park you attend, check protocol for rental availability and designated parking.

Plan Ahead of Time

Theme parks now do a great job at allowing you to plan ahead of time. Whether that means signing up for FastPasses or looking at ride wait times through the theme park’s app, it’s best to decide with your family which attractions you want to see beforehand. Having a plan eliminates exhaustion from aimlessly walking around or getting lost.

You can also look up an online map from whichever theme park you plan on attending ahead of time. That way, you know how to get to different park locations and plan out your route for the day.

Take Plenty of Rest Breaks

Walking for hours takes a heavy toll on your body—especially during the summer when you’ll be outside in direct sunlight. At least every 30 minutes to an hour, have your loved one sit down and rest in a shaded area. This is the ideal opportunity for your family hydrate, reapply sunscreen, catch up on snacks, and gain back some energy.

If the family is still eager to experience the park while your senior needs rest, consider an indoor show. An air-conditioned theatre is the perfect spot for entertainment and “chilling out.”
