The Importance of Alzheimer’s Research Funding

Alzheimer’s is a debilitating disease that affects those we love most. As we age, we become more susceptible to this neurodegenerative disease which only gets worse as time passes. Over 50% of dementia cases are caused by Alzheimer’s disease resulting in memory loss issues, disorientation, and difficulty with language. Unfortunately, the causes of Alzheimer’s disease are not completely understood which is what makes it so difficult to treat. That is not to say that all hope is lost, however, as research continues to make great strides in finding better treatments.

Congressional Backing

The Global Alzheimer’s Platform Foundation, a nonprofit organization which focuses on expediting Alzheimer’s clinical trials, received a substantial increase in financial backing on May 4th, 2017. This increase was in the form of $400 million thanks to The National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH received $2 billion during the 2017 fiscal year because of a bipartisan Congressional vote and chose to set aside $400 million of the new budget toward Alzheimer’s research. This increase puts the total research budget for Alzheimer’s at $1.4 billion, which is a 40% increase from the original budget.

The Need for a Cure

The funding for research is crucial as Alzheimer’s is on the top ten list of diseases without a cure which result in death. Unfortunately, treatment is difficult, and The National Institute of Health estimates that the number of people living with the disease will triple by 2050, resulting in 14 million people living with Alzheimer’s. Finding a cure for Alzheimer’s is our only option. As of 2017, the U.S. cost of long-term health care for Alzheimer’s was $259 billion, and in a mere three years, it is estimated by the NIH to reach $511 billion. Failure to find a cure for Alzheimer’s could cripple our national economy.
